Advanced Lipid Studies
Cardiovascular disease which includes heart disease and strokes is the leading cause of death in both men and women regardless of ethnicity in the United States. Risk factors such as age, blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood sugar do not reflect the actual condition of the arteries or heart; thus, these risk factors are not sensitive predictors of disease. Newer methods are now available to identify abnormalities in the pre-clinical stage, long before they become symptomatic.
What is Cardiovascular Disease?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to abnormalities of the blood vessels (arteries) or heart that result in heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, kidney failure and sudden death. High blood pressure (hypertension) may contribute to blood vessels and heart abnormalities. Most heart disease is caused by blood vessel abnormalities. Thanks to advances in medicine, artery and heart abnormalities today can be identified long before the arteries become clogged and symptoms develop.
Identifying Your Individual Risk
Dr. Shughrue has taken advanced courses in stroke and heart attack prevention.
Dr. Shughrue knows that an estimated one in four persons who die from cardiovascular-related diseases experience no advance symptoms. Such diseases are a direct consequence of blood vessel and heart abnormalities that can be detected by special tests, but which do not necessarily result in symptoms. Early detection of coronary artery disease can lead to preventive measures, motivating individuals at risk to adopt healthier lifestyles or medication when indicated decreasing their risk of developing severe coronary disease.
The following are available through Dr. Shughrue to help better quantify your individual risk and customize your treatment and prevention needs.
CardioRiskScan Carotid Artery (CIMT)
A non- invasive ultrasound evaluation of the carotid artery to create an approximate arterial age when compared to normal populations in the evaluation of risk for future coronary events. CIMT uses B-mode (brightness mode) ultrasound by a trained sonographer to non-invasively acquire images of the carotid artery wall for analysis, allowing the clinician to isolate the area of interest in the artery wall.

Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABI)
The Ankle Brachial Pressure Index ABI A simple non invasive test that is painless and easy that compares the blood pressure in your ankles to that of your arms. The pressures in the posterior tibial artery and dorsalis pedis artery in the feet and the brachial artery at the elbow are estimated. A Doppler probe is used, through a device called the Pulse Volume Recorder (some variances may apply depending on the physician), to monitor the pulse while a sphygmomanometer(blood pressure) cuff is inflated above the artery. The cuff is deflated and the pressure at which the pulse returns is recorded. Abnormal findings may be suggestive of a condition known as Peripheral Artey Disease or PAD which may put an individual at risk for cardiovascular disease(heart attack/stroke) or loss of a limb (amputation) and even death if not detected and addressed early.
Berkeley HeartLab Inc-Blood Panel
More than just standard Total Cholesterol, LDL and HDL this panel gives advanced testing for atherogenic sub particles, genetic markers and environmental factors. Designed to give an individualized and comprehensive profile to better understand the factors contributing to your unique disease process and its treatment. www.bhlinc.com
Weight-Loss Program
If you’re looking for a proven diet that works with a recommendation you can trust-how about this:
Family Care Medical Services is offering a physician supervised weight-loss program and the supervising physician - Dr Cynthia Shughrue - has been successfully using herself! In fact other staff members have used and all have using the program with equally successful results.
The weight-loss program focuses on targeting fat loss and rapidly produces results the patient can feel. The process of burning fat creates a “natural” appetite suppression within the body. The program is built around a low carbohydrate, low fat, low calorie, protein supplements that promote fat loss in a quick and safe way. Muscle mass is spared, energy and vitality are promoted, and appetite is naturally suppressed. Many of our patients note that their cravings will disappear, the inches melt away, and they feel better everyday. Once the initial consultation is performed by Dr. Shughrue if medical conditions allow, the patient may start immediately. Weekly or bimonthly follow-ups (including body fat measurements) are performed by Dr. Shughrue and her staff with education and motivational suggestions as needed.
The Program is Phased (1-4). The first phase of the Program starts with two replacement meals and a snack from the “program” along with vegetables and salad plus a self prepared meal of lean meat or fish. Once an 80% weight goal objective has been reached the patient will transition to the second phase where more regular food is added. The “program” offers more than 45 different meal items and they can be prepared in a variety of ways. After transitioning through the 3rd and into the 4th phase the “program” provides ongoing education to help the patient maintain their new identities as the thin person within. More information about the program may be obtained by calling the office during normal business hours.
MEDGEM : RMR Measurement
The technology, developed by HealtheTech, works by measuring the Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR, which is the number of calories the body burns to maintain essential functions such as heart rate, brain activity and breathing.
RMR can represent up to 75 per cent of the total metabolism in someone who leads a sedentary lifestyle, and is therefore an important factor in how efficiently calories will be burned off. The machine, which has four sensors, works by measuring the difference between the amount of oxygen inhaled and exhaled. The sensors take into account surrounding air conditions--the pressure, humidity, temperature and oxygen levels--and from that it calculates how much oxygen is used with each breath.
What is Metabolism? Metabolism is the biochemical process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy our bodies need to function. Metabolism is typically measured in kilocalories or more commonly, calories. Total metabolic rate represents the calories needed for maintaining body functions, daily activity (occupational and lifestyle), and the energy cost of exercise or planned activity.
What is RMR? Resting metabolic rate (RMR) represents the calories the body burns to maintain vital body functions (heart rate, brain function, and breathing). In simple terms, it is the number of calories a person would burn if they were awake, but at rest all day. RMR can represent up to 75% of a person’s total metabolism if they are inactive or lead a sedentary lifestyle.
Why is it necessary to measure RMR? Since RMR accounts for up to 75% of the total calories we need each day, it’s a critical piece of information to appropriately establish daily caloric needs, whether we’re trying to lose or maintain weight. Most healthcare and fitness professionals recognize that metabolism is impacted by a variety of characteristics such as fever, illness, high fitness, obesity, active weight loss, etc. Traditionally, healthcare professional have not had access to sophisticated measurement technology and have relied on estimates of RMR. Because metabolism is different among individuals, estimating can lead to errors, and incorrect calorie budgets. As a result of these estimates, individuals can be over eating or under eating, and not be successful in reaching their personal goals. The most accurate assessment of caloric needs is by measuring oxygen consumption and determining individual metabolism. The Med Gem device is a tool that will provide information vital for determining a personalized caloric budget, based on individual metabolism, necessary to achieve and maintain proper weight and nutrition.

Recovery time: Minimal although the skin may be slightly red for a few hours after a treatment session.
Frequency: May be repeated weekly or at further intervals at the discretion of Dr. Shughrue to maximize results.
Risks: Skin irritation, redness, irregular pigmentation and/or scarring
Duration of results: continued improvement is seen over time with repeat treatments and sun protection and proper skin maintenance are essential to maintaining results.
Light Emitting Diodes
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) involve the stimulations of natural collagen production through the use of cool light treatment. This treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with other modalities such as fractional resurfacing.
